You’ll want to have a container ready to catch your mail and other papers. Baskets designed to hold newspapers are the ideal size, with a large, flat bottom to protect items that shouldn’t be bent (such as your child’s artwork or important legal documents). The one I use is from The Container Store, measures 17-7/8” × 13-3/4” × 5-1/8” high, and is made of lucky bamboo. If you want, toss in a letter opener so you always have one handy.
Step 1: Deposit the Mail
When you walk in the door with the mail, you probably follow a ritual, albeit an unconscious one. Despite that ritual, the mail probably gets scattered, lost, or simply swallowed up in an existing pile. The addition of one basket for depositing paper changes the landscape. We learn through repetition, so if it takes a week or so for you to get in the habit of depositing your mail in the basket, be patient. Stop and start as many times as you need until you get your 21 consecutive days under your belt. After that, you won’t have to think about this task because the habit will be established.
